

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., September 16, 2006 – Springfield College freshman Kaitlynn Cates (Middlebury, Conn.) defeated Wheaton College senior Darby McDermott at #2 singles, 5-7, 6-4 (10-2), but it was the Lyons which defeated the Pride by a final score of 8-1 this afternoon at the Appleton Courts in New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action.
Wheaton improves to a perfect 6-0 overall on the season and 2-0 in conference play, as SC falls to 1-2 overall and 0-2 in the NEWMAC.
Senior Jamie Weiss and freshman Katherine Knies teamed up at #1 doubles to defeat Pride sophomore Melissa Weinstein (Allentown, Pa.) and Cates by a margin of 8-2. Weiss and Knies then went on to capture their respective singles matches in straight sets, at #3 and #4, respectively.
Also picking up singles victories for the Lyons included junior Briana Jackson at #1 singles, 6-1, 6-3, sophomore Oriana Federico at #5 singles, 6-4, 6-1, and sophomore Maya Milic-Strkalj at #6 singles, 6-0, 6-1.
For SC’s Cates, the freshman remains undefeated in singles play for her collegiate career, as she has started her first three matches in a Pride uniform with three consecutive wins.
SC will next host Clark University in yet another conference match on Tuesday, September 19th, in a 4:00 p.m. start at the Appleton Courts.
