SPRINGFIELD, Mass., January 27, 2007 – Springfield College junior forward Gregg Daly (Farmington, Conn.) poured in a career-high 26 points on 8-of-9 shooting from the floor, 8-of-8 shooting from the free throw line, and 2-of-2 shooting from beyond the arc to help propel the Pride to an 89-83 overtime victory this afternoon over Clark University in Blake Arena.
With the hard-fought victory, SC improves to 10-10 overall on the season and 5-2 in New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play, good for second place. The Cougars of Clark fall to 7-10 overall on the season and 1-5 in league action.
Daly paced four Pride players in double figures this afternoon, as senior point guard Anthony Pizzo (Clifton Park, N.Y.) tied his career-best performance with 17 points. The co-captain also added eight assists, five rebounds and four steals. Junior guard Jamaal Gibbs (Norwalk, Conn.) chipped in with 16 points, and senior co-captain Damian Farley (Natick, Mass.) recorded 13 points and six rebounds.
In the first half, SC built a seven-point lead (20-13) on a jumper from freshman forward Pat Crean (Sleepy Hollow, N.Y.) with 7:43 remaining before halftime. At the end of the first stanza, however, Clark produced an 11-5 run to pull within just one point (33-32) at the break.
The Pride opened the beginning stages of the second half on a 21-10 run to take a 54-42 lead off of a Daly free throw with 11:22 remaining. The Cougars scratched and clawed their way back into the game at that point, going on an 18-5 run to take the lead (60-59) with 5:07 left. The Clark run was powered by forward Mark Alexander, as the freshman hit three shots from beyond the arc to get his team back in the contest.
The game was neck-and-neck for the rest of regulation, and with SC up two (75-73) and time winding down, Cougar sophomore forward Peter Normandin converted on a lay-in with just two-tenths of a second left to force overtime.
In the extra session, the two teams traded buckets and the score was once again tied, this time at 81-all with 2:20 left. The Pride then finished the game on an 8-2 run, hitting eight of its 10 free throw attempts to ice the affair.
Clark’s Normandin finished the game with a team-high 22 points to go along with seven rebounds. Alexander ended up with 18 points on 4-of-9 shooting from three-point territory, and junior guard Dominique Beck finished with 16 points.
SC will next host the Coast Guard Academy on Wednesday evening, January 31st, in a 5:30 p.m. start in Blake Arena.
