

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., October 18, 2005 – Springfield College senior opposite Ashley Reves (Orchard Park, N.Y.) collected a team-best 16 kills to go along with 10 digs, but it was the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Engineers which defeated the Pride, 3-1, in front of a raucous Blake Arena crowd this evening (Oct. 18) in New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action.
MIT (23-5, 7-0 NEWMAC) took control of the match early, winning the first two games by identical, 30-26 margins. The Engineers were led by junior middle hitter Briana Stephenson and senior middle hitter Caroline Jordan, as the two combined for 27 kills in the win, with 14 and 13, respectively.
SC (21-5, 6-1 NEWMAC) came roaring back in the third game, however, taking the set by a 30-23 score to keep the match alive. Junior middle blocker MaryKathryn O’Neil (Liverpool, N.Y.) helped lead the comeback effort, racking up 15 kills and a team-high six blocks (one solo) in the match. Junior libero Leah Hettrick (Meriden, Conn.) chipped in with 33 digs on the night for SC.
But MIT was too much for the Pride this evening, as the Engineers won the fourth game, 30-24, taking over sole possession in the conference regular season standings at 7-0 overall.
With the loss, its first conference loss of the season, the Pride falls to 6-1 in NEWMAC play while garnering a 21-5 overall record this season. SC will next compete in the Women’s Volleyball Hall of Fame Invitational, hosting two matches on Friday evening, October 21, in Blake Arena and Dana Gymnasium.
Joel Dearing will enter his 20th season as head women's volleyball coach at his alma mater in the fall of 2008. Dearing is regarded nationally as one of the sport’s best coaches and he has the resume to prove it. Dearing ranks in the top-10 in Division III history with a 638-293 (.685) overall mark in 27 seasons as a women’s volleyball coach.
