Women's Soccer Cruises Past Mount Holyoke, 5-0

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass., October 17, 2006 – Springfield College overpowered Mount Holyoke College, 5-0, in today’s New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) contest. The Pride improves to 5-2 in league play and 9-4 overall. The Lyons remain winless in the NEWMAC and falls to 1-11-1 this season.

SC turned up the heat halfway through the first stanza, with sophomore forward Nicole Hanewich (Cumberland, R.I.) scoring the first goal of the match in the 29th minute (28:39) off a feed from sophomore midfielder Lauren Peltier (Agawam, Mass.).

With eight minutes remaining in the half (37:41), Peltier converted her own shot to put the Pride up 2-0. The goal was assisted by senior midfielder Michelle Bongiovanni (West Springfield, Mass.), her fourth of the season. Mount Holyoke goalkeeper Liz Guenther posted an impressive 14 saves in the first frame to keep the Lyons close.

In the second half, Mount Holyoke held SC scoreless for nearly 23 minutes until the Pride netted three goals in three minutes, leaving the Lyons far behind. Junior midfielder Lindsay Bugbee (Granby, Conn.), freshman forward Caitlin Sawczuk (Plainville, Conn.), and sophomore back Kayla Thibeault (Lebanon, Conn.) each recorded a goal to make the final score 5-0.

SC sophomore goalkeeper Sue Jenney (Agawam, Mass.) came up with four saves for her fourth shutout, as she improves to 7-2 this season. Guenther tallied 19 saves for Mount Holyoke.

The Pride will next travel to Wellesley College to take on the Blue this weekend, on Saturday, October 21st in a 1:00 p.m. start.
