Softball Swept By Smith College in NEWMAC Action

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., April 9, 2006 – Smith College’s starting pitchers Katie Maroney (Santa Clarita, Calif.) and Emily Hiltzik (Westbury, N.Y.) combined to pitch 14 innings, strike out 11 and allow just one run, as the Pioneers took two from the Pride this afternoon, 4-1 and 1-0, at Potter Field in New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action.

In the first game, Smith jumped out to an early 2-0 lead courtesy of RBI hits from senior outfielder Sara Watson (Kent, Wash.) and sophomore infielder Kathryn Schoenen (Ellicott City, Md.). The Pioneers would add on two more runs in the fifth inning en-route to its 4-1 victory.

SC senior shortstop Caitlin McGaughey (South Windsor, Conn.) scored the Pride’s lone run of the day off an RBI single from senior captain Keir Stanford (Melrose, Mass.), who went 2-for-3 in the opening game.

Maroney picked up her fourth victory of the season for Smith, while Pride sophomore hurler Stephanie Blackman (Stamford, Conn.) fell to 6-7 on the year.

In the second game, SC freshman pitcher Samantha Rhodes (Mendon, Mass.) threw a complete-game, allowing just five hits and one unearned run, but since the Pride bats were shutdown, received her third loss of the season, and is now 4-3.

Smith College took advantage of an SC error in the third inning to score the only run of the contest, off an RBI single from junior outfielder Deborah Sasges (Vancouver, B.C.). After allowing the one run, a spectacular throw from Pride centerfielder Angela Atkins (East Haddam, Conn.) to catcher Amanda Johansson (Leominster, Mass.) got the Pride out of the inning.

Hiltzik improved to 3-4 on the year for Smith, as the Pioneers improved its overall record to 9-8 and NEWMAC record to 3-3. SC falls to 12-15 overall and 5-5 in conference play.

SC will travel to the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA) to play a doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon, April 11, beginning at 3:30 p.m.
