SPRINGFIELD, Mass., October 26, 2005 - Springfield College sophomore forward Colin Cook (Wilbraham, Mass.) scored two goals, including the game-winner, as the Pride downed visiting Western Connecticut State University (WCSU), 3-0, for its third-straight victory this evening (Oct. 26) in non-conference action.
SC (4-10-1) tallied the first goal of the game on a header by Cook which was assisted by sophomore tri-captain Paul Lepak (Windsor, Conn.) in the 19th minute of play (18:38). The Colonials (11-4-2) and the Pride battled aggressively throughout the remainder of the first half, but neither team was able to score and the game remained 1-0 at the break.
With 38:15 remaining in regulation, Western Conn. was called for a foul 25 yards out. Cook then took a shot off the re-start which found the back of net to give the Pride a two-goal advantage.
Less than twelve minutes later (63:19), the Colonials were again called for a foul 25 yards from the goal and sophomore midfielder Tony Distasio (Burlington, Conn.) took a feed from sophomore midfielder Ted Feeley (Syracuse, N.Y.) which found the back of the goal to give the Pride a 3-0 lead. Neither team would score in the remaining 26:39 as SC earned its third-straight victory, handing West Conn. just its fourth loss of the year.
Western Conn. goalkeeper Daniel Michalowski made five saves on the night, while Pride goalkeeper B.J. Sturdivant (Bear, Del.) tallied two saves for the first shutout victory of the season for the Pride.
SC will next travel to the Coast Guard Academy on Saturday, October 29, for a critical New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) match-up with the Bears, beginning at 1:00 p.m.. The match will mark the final regular season contest for the Pride, and with a win, the Pride would have the opportunity to host a first round NEWMAC Tournament contest.
