SPRINGFIELD, Mass., April 17, 2006 -- Denise Fumicello of Springfield College earlier today (Apr. 17) was named the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference softball Co-Player of the Week.
Denise shares the honor with Babson College senior Meghan Gaskell.
A sophomore second baseman from Brockton, Massachusetts, Fumicello led the Pride to a 5-1 week (all six games played on the road) last week. Overall, the leadoff hitter batted .500 (13-of-26). Included among those 13 hits were three doubles and a triple. She also scored 11 runs and knocked in five more. In addition, she was 4-for-4 in the stolen base department.
Denise now has 24 SB’s (in 25 attempts) this season, and is batting .421, tops in the league in both categories. Denise also leads the league in runs scored by a wide margin with 37, in triples with four, and is second in doubles with 11.
Springfield finds itself in third place in the NEWMAC, but with four games left also finds itself controlling its own destiny with regards to the NEWMAC post-season tourney. If SC can defeat Babson at home twice this Friday and then defeat MIT on the road twice this Saturday, it can do no worse than a tie for first place with Babson and/or Wheaton. Springfield already owns the tiebreaker over Wheaton having swept the Lyons earlier this season. This scenario also precludes a tiebreaker advantage over Babson with a sweep. Thus, Springfield still has a chance to become the number one seed in the NEWMAC post-season tourney.
