

NORTON, Mass., October 4, 2005 - Springfield College senior setter Alesia Vaccari (Winsted, Conn.) served up 37 assists and senior opposite Ashley Reves (Orchard Park, N.Y.) accumulated 15 kills and 17 digs as the Pride swept Wheaton College, 3-0 (30-20, 30-13, 30-18), in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Tuesday night, October 4, at the Emerson Gymnasium in Norton, Mass.
After opening the first game down 5-3, SC scored the next six points and didn't look back the rest of the way, going on a 20-5 run to take game one, 30-20. In game two, Wheaton responded to take a 10-9 lead. After a Pride timeout, SC answered back yet again as it took 20 of the game's final 24 points to win 30-13. In the second game, junior middle blocker MaryKathryn O'Neil (Liverpool, N.Y.) recorded two kills and helped spark the Pride run with three consecutive service aces.
Junior libero Leah Hettrick (Meriden, Conn.) recorded 20 digs in the match for SC, which improves to 17-4 overall on the season. The Pride has started its NEWMAC season in perfect fashion, winning its first five conference contests.
SC will next host the Tom Hay Invitational this weekend, on Saturday, October 8, taking place in Blake Arena and Dana Gymnasium. The four-team round robin Invitational will feature the Pride, the Owls of Keene State College and Westfield State College, and the Scots of Gordon College.
Joel Dearing will enter his 21st season as head women's volleyball coach at his alma mater in the fall of 2009. Dearing is regarded nationally as one of the sport’s best coaches and he has the resume to prove it. Dearing ranks in the top-10 in Division III history with a 670-298 (.692) overall mark in 28 seasons as a women’s volleyball coach.
