Tufts University Pulls Away From Men's Basketball, 77-61

Box Score/Play-by-Play

MEDFORD, Mass., November 28, 2006 - The Tufts University men's basketball team used a dominating mid-game run to sail to a 77-61 victory over visiting Springfield College in non-conference play at Cousens Gymnasium on Tuesday night.

The victory lifts the Jumbos over .500 for the season, at 3-2. They were led by 20 points from sophomore transfer Jon Pierce (Belmont, Mass.), who connected on 8-of-11 field goals. The Pride dropped to 2-2 overall. SC was paced by 18 points from freshman forward Pat Crean (Sleepy Hollow, N.Y.), who like Pierce, was efficient shooting the ball, going 7-of-12 from the field.

The visitors had the upper hand early, getting out to a 12-6 lead on a jumper by Crean at 15:21 of the first half. The Pride led 17-12 after a three-pointer by freshman guard Ryan Blackmon (Stamford, Conn.) at 10:35, but that is when the momentum started to shift dramatically.

Tufts scored 15 of the next 17 points to lead 27-19 on a three-pointer by junior Jake Weitzen (New York, N.Y.) with 5:10 on the clock. Pierce had eight points during that stretch. The Jumbos closed the half with a 35-26 lead. Pierce had 16 points at the break, while SC's Crean had nine.

Tufts blew it open in the second half. Eight and a half minutes into the period, its lead was at 25 points (54-29) off of a traditional three-point play from freshman Dan Cook (Dover, Mass.). That was part of a 19-3 Jumbo stretch to open the second half. In all, Tufts outscored the Pride 42-12 from 10:35 of the first half to 11:37 of the second.

SC senior co-captain Damian Farley (Natick, Mass.) added 12 points and five rebounds for the Pride, which hit just 37.3 percent (22-for-59) of its shots overall. SC connected on just four of its 21 attempts from deep.

SC will next play in the 2006 Pioneer Valley Men's Hoop Classic on Friday and Saturday, December 1st and 2nd. The Pride will take on Westfield State College on Friday evening, beginning at 8:00 p.m., and will then face host Amherst College on Saturday afternoon at 3:00 p.m.
