BABSON PARK, Mass. – October 6, 2007 -- Babson College swept the doubles play and then won the top three singles matches to claim a 6-3 victory over visiting Springfield College in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's tennis matchup on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Beavers improved to 7-3 overall and 4-2 in the conference, while the Pride dropped to 2-6 overall and 1-5 in league play.
Leading Babson's sweep of doubles play were juniors Courtney Farrell (Burlington, Mass.) and Heather Walsh (Warwick, R.I.), who prevailed at number one, 8-3. Junior co-captain Kali Hogan (Clinton, Mass.) and sophomore Jessica Huang (Andover, Mass.) teamed up for an 8-3 win at number two, and senior co-captain Jamie Burke (Burlington, Mass.) and sophomore Liz Sheerin (Melrose, Mass.) won at three, 8-6.
The Beavers clinched the match with three singles victories, as Farrell earned a 6-2, 6-0 victory at number one, Hogan won, 6-1, 6-4, at two, and Walsh claimed a 6-1, 5-0 default win at three.
Springfield's points came courtesy of a 6-7 (7), 6-1, (10-7) superset win by senior Jessica Sousa (Falmouth, Mass.) at number four, a 6-2, 6-1 victory by senior Shannon Desroches (Belchertown, Mass.) at five, and a 7-5, 6-2 win by sophomore Sarah Russo (Amsterdam, N.Y.) at number six.
