SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – April 16, 2007 – The Springfield College softball team has been playing extremely well lately to say the least.
The team has won seven straight and now owns an overall record of 18-10. And in New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference play, Springfield has now moved into first place by percentage points. SC has a 9-3 record, while Wheaton is at 10-4.
The Pride was buoyed by the news earlier today that sophomore lefthander Samantha Rhodes (Mendon, Mass.) was named the NEWMAC Pitcher of the Week. She went 2-0 with a 2.06 ERA, striking out 21 while walking just two. Included was an 8-0 five-inning complete game 2-hit shutout over MCLA last Tuesday. She also had an important 3-2 victory over WPI last Saturday.
SC’s No. 1 pitcher, junior right-hander Stephanie Blackman (Stamford, Conn.), went 3-0 with a 3.73 ERA on the week. Blackman is now 10-4 overall, while Rhodes has evened her record at 6-6.
In the past six games, SC has been pounding the ball, batting .414 as a team and averaging 9.7 runs per game in that stretch. A total of 12 SC players have hit at least .333 or better in those six games. Just listen to these batting averages in that span.

As is the case with every collegiate spring sport in New England that plays its games outside, Springfield softball is fighting the weather. SC was scheduled to play three doubleheaders from April 16 though 18 – at Keene State, at RPI, and at WNEC. But all have either been cancelled or postponed due to rain, cold, or field conditions.
Springfield’s next games are Friday at Babson at 3:30 p.m. (DH), then at home versus MIT Saturday at 12 noon (DH).
