No. 15 Wrestling Captures NECCWA Crown
WORCESTER, Mass., February 23, 2004 – Springfield College senior Tom Medonis (Wethersfield, Conn.) and freshman Michael Gaeta (Manalapan, N.J.) each won their respective weight classes to lead the Pride to its seventh conference title over the past eight years at the New England College Conference Wrestling Association (NECCWA) Championship held at WPI this weekend.
Medonis, who was victorious in the 197-pound weight class, and Gaeta, who won at 141 pounds, will represent the Pride at the NCAA Division III Championships along with junior Brian Viglione (Chelmsford, Mass.), who received a wild card berth after finishing second in the 174-pound division.
SC won the event with 110.5 total team points, followed by Trinity (88), Williams (86), WPI (80.5), and Norwich (76), to round out the top-five.
Medonis posted a perfect 5-0 mark in the 197-pound division on the weekend, knocking off Trinity’s Mike Doros in the finals. Gaeta, the No. 3 seed in the 141-pound division, posted a 7-1 record in the competition, defeating Trinity’s second-seeded Mark Foresi from Trinity
Other strong performers for the Pride on the weekend included senior Justin Friend (Jefferson, N.H.), who placed second in the 125-pound weight class with a 6-2 record, and sophomore Pete Marques (Massapequa, N.Y.), who also placed second in the 133-pound division with a 3-2 mark.
The NCAA Division III Championships will be held at Loras (Iowa) College on Friday and Saturday, March 5-6.
