Trinity College Slips Past No. 16 Field Hockey, 3-2, in Regular-Season Finale
BoxscoreHARTFORD, Conn., October 26, 2006 – Freshman Carolyn Wolcott scored the game-winning goal just 2:40 before halftime, after assisting on the game-tying tally 39 seconds earlier to lead the Trinity College Bantams to a 3-2 win over the visiting Springfield College Pride in field hockey action this evening at Sheppard Field.
Trinity improves to 9-4 with its eighth straight home win, while the Pride, ranked No. 2 in the New England East Region and No. 16 in the nation, falls to 14-5 in its regular-season finale. SC will next hosts Smith College in the first round of the 2006 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Field Hockey Tournament on Saturday afternoon, October 28th, in a 1:00 p.m. start at Benedum Field.
The Pride took a 1-0 lead early in the first half on one of two unassisted goals by sophomore Jane Kelleher (Chatham, Mass.). Trinity tied the score at one apiece in the first stanza when sophomore defender Christine Mwatarura brought the ball along the right side of the circle and fed junior midfielder Katie Curran for its first score of the game with 12:29 on the clock.
Kelleher scored on a penalty corner with 7:44 left before the break, but Bantam senior co-captain midfielder Lauren Malinowski blasted a rolling shot from the top of the circle on a corner that sped past SC senior co-captain goalie Emma Kaplan (Ridgefield, Conn.) and into the cage. Wolcott netted the clincher shortly after, converting on a nice pass from sophomore forward Karli Del Rossi, and the defenses held each other scoreless the rest of the way.
Curran finished with a goal and an assist for Trinity, while freshman goalie Jillian Fraker had seven saves, including three acrobatic stops in a short span at the 10-minute mark of the second half. Kaplan finished with six stops for the Pride.

After only five years as head coach of the Pride, Melissa Rogers, has continued the SC tradition of winning on the field hockey turf, posting an impressive 94-24 record, good for a winning percentage of .796 at the helm of her alma mater.
