Five Men's Track and Field Athletes Earn Open All-New England Status

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., February 26, 2007 – Five members of the Springfield College men’s track and field team received All-New England honors as SC finished 16th out of 42 teams at the Open New England Championships at Boston University this past weekend.

Senior All-American and captain Alex Kampersal (Natick, Mass.) placed fourth in the shot put with an NCAA qualifying throw of 52-feet, 6 ½ inches. Senior Jeff Cogan (Walworth, N.Y.) tied for seventh in the high jump with a leap of 6-feet, 3 ½ inches.

Both junior Dominic Uguccioni (Colrain, Mass.) and freshman Steve Headley (Wilbraham, Mass.) placed eighth in their events -- Uguccioni in the weight throw (55-3 ¾ ) and Headley in the 55-meter dash (6.50 sec).

Sophomore Mike Griffin (Scarborough, Maine) finished 8th in the 1000. In the prelims, he recorded a time of 2:29.55, which was only five one-hundredths of a second off the school record. For his efforts, Griffin was named SC’s Male Maroon of the Week.

Up next, Springfield College will compete at the ECAC Championships at Wesleyan University on March 2-3.
