SPRINGFIELD, Mass., January 2, 2007 – Junior forward Gregg Daly scored 12 points off the bench, adding 14 rebounds, in leading the Springfield College men’s basketball team to a 64-48 victory over Colby College of Waterville, Maine, tonight at SC’s Blake Arena in game #2 of the Holiday Inn/Naismith Classic.
With the win, host Springfield is now 4-7, while Colby falls to 7-4.
In game #1 tonight, Kean University of Union, N.J., defeated SUNY Plattsburgh of Plattsburgh, N.Y., 67-62.
As a result, Springfield will host Kean tomorrow (Wednesday, Jan. 3) at 7:30 pm in the men’s championship game. At 3 pm, Colby will take on SUNY Plattsburgh in the consolation game.
Tonight’s second game had some real ebbs and flows. Springfield jumped out to 14 point leads twice in the first half, the first at 20-6 with 9:32 remaining on a jumper by senior guard Anthony Pizzo (Clifton Park, N.Y.), and the second at 23-9 with 7:27 left on a lay-up by junior guard Jamaal Gibbs (Norwalk, Conn.).
But Colby came back strong to outscore SC, 15-3, the rest of that half to close to within two by the intermission, 26-24.
At the start of the second half, Colby extended its run and took its one and only lead of the game on a 3-pointer by senior guard Nick Farrell (Aspen, Colo.). With 17:57 left, the White Mules led, 29-28. But that lead lasted all of 15 seconds as SC sophomore forward/center John Strawson (Torrington, Conn.) scored his first hoop of the game at the 17:42 mark, giving SC the lead for good at 30-29.
With 12:24 to go, it was still a five-point game as Strawson made one of two free throws (40-35). That point, however, was the beginning of a 9-0 run that gave SC a 48-35 lead with 9:50 to go.
From that point on, Colby cut it to 11 (48-37) on a lay-up by sophomore guard Artie Cutrone (Garden City, N.Y.), but that was as close as the White Mules would get the rest of the way.
Daly, a 6-7 junior center/forward from Farmington, Conn., had one of his better outings of the season with his 12 points and game-high 14 rebounds. Following him in the SC balanced attack were Gibbs with 12 points, senior forward Damian Farley (Natick, Mass.) with 11, and Strawson with 11. Pizzo had nine points, five assists, and four steals.
For Colby, which had a very tough shooting night (15-of-57 for a .263 shooting percentage), senior center Drew Cohen (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y.) had a game-high 19 points to go along with 11 rebounds and six blocks. Farrell followed with 12 points (and six assists and four steals). No one else scored more than five points.
In game #1, Kean University senior forward Bryan Keller (Piscataway, N.J.) scored a game-high 16 points and added four assists as the Cougars rallied past SUNY Plattsburgh, 67-62, in the first men’s contest of the evening. Despite trailing by three points at the half (29-26), Kean outscored the Cardinals of Plattsburgh State by a 41-33 margin in the second stanza to improve to 9-2 overall on the season. SUNY Plattsburgh drops to 4-4 overall.
The second 20 minutes of play was back-and-forth as the two teams traded buckets all the way until the 6:44 mark. The score was knotted at 50 apiece with 6:44 left in regulation. But Kean then went on an 11-5 run to take a 61-55 lead with 2:46 to go. Plattsburgh rallied to pull within one (63-62) with just 11 seconds left, but the Cougars were able to fend off the Cardinals for the five-point victory.
Kean senior guard Lamar Wright (Galloway, N.J.) chipped in with 13 points and a game-best five steals for the Cougars, as senior guard Bryan Miller (Trenton, N.J.) also put up double-figure numbers with 10 points and a team-high six assists.
SUNY Plattsburgh senior guard Jerrad Dumont (Chateaugay, N.Y.) scored 14 points for the Cardinals on 4-of-6 shooting from beyond the arc, and junior forward Khylan Hunt (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) added a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
