Men's Soccer Edged By Unbeaten Amherst, 2-1

Box score

AMHERST, Mass., Sept. 29, 2004 -- Springfield College junior Justin Pepoli (Ashburnham, Mass.) scored his third goal of the season but the visiting Pride dropped a hard-fought 2-1 decision at undefeated Amherst in a non-conference match on Wednesday.

This was the fourth one-goal loss of the season for SC (3-6), which started six freshmen in the match. First-year keeper B.J. Sturdivant (Bear, Del.) was sensational, making 11 stops.

Amherst's Mike Wohl broke a 1-1 tie in the 83rd minute after junior Joe Gannon’s shot pulled Sturdivant wide of the box.

After a scoreless frist half, Gannon assisted on Amherst’s first goal as well, sending a corner kick to sophomore Rob Madden in front of the net for Madden's third goal of the year 5:14 into the second half. SC knotted the score in the 61st minute later when Pepoli collected a loose ball in front of the net and connected for his third goal of the season.

Amherst junior goalie Greg Lockwood turned away a trio of shots in the win.
