

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- February 15, 2007 -- Sophomore Peter Normandin (Westminster, Mass.) scored 22 points, including a few key free throws down the stretch, to lead the Clark University men’s basketball team to a 73-72 victory over Springfield College in New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Senior Night at Clark's Kneller Athletic Center in Worcester, Mass. Thursday evening.
Clark, which holds down the fifth spot in the conference after tonight’s action, improves to 10-13 (4-7 NEWMAC). Springfield (11-13, 6-5 NEWMAC) remains in third place in the league standings.
The Cougars, who never trailed in the first half, jumped out to a 42-26 halftime lead. A 13-0 run that featured three three -pointers – a pair by Asher Cowan (Peterborough, N.H.) and a D.J. Brinn (Madison, Conn.) trifecta - gave the Cougars a 14-point (28-14) edge at the 5:59 mark. Springfield battled back to close the gap to 10 (34-24) on junior guard Jamaal Gibbs' (Norwalk, Conn.) trey, but eight straight points from Normandin, including consecutive threes, gave the Cougars a 42-26 advantage at the break.
Clark canned 8-of-13 (61.5 %) three-pointers in the first half. Normandin led the Cougars with 11 first-half points, while Gibbs topped Springfield with 12.
Springfield whittled down a 16-point deficit midway through the second half. Senior forward Damian Farley (Natick, Mass.) scored seven points over a 2:56 stretch to bring the Pride within six (56-62) at 5:52. After a technical and personal foul was called on freshman guard Ryan Blackmon (Stamford, Conn.), Clark pushed the lead back up to 11 (69-58) on Normandin’s 4-for-4 effort at the stripe and a three-pointer by Mark Alexander (Providence, R.I.). The Pride responded by scoring the next nine points, capped by a trey from Gibbs for a two-point deficit (67-69) with 2:21 remaining. However, Normandin and Dominique Beck (Brockton, Mass.) combined for four points at the line for a 73-69 advantage with :09 ticks left. Farley drained a baseline three as time expired for the final score.
Normandin was 4-for-4 from the floor, 2-for-2 from beyond the arc, and 12-for-14 at the line and grabbed a team-high five rebounds. Cowan, who was honored for playing in his final regular season home game, added 12 points for Clark. Senior Gunnar Hagstrom (Yarmouth, Me.) was also recognized prior to the start of tonight’s contest.
Gibbs and Farley led Springfield with 20 points each, while sophomore center John Strawson (Torrington, Conn.) finished with 10.
Springfield outrebounded Clark, 40-27, but shot only 40.7 percent from the floor. Clark shot 47.9 percent from the field and 45.8 percent from long range.
Clark will travel to MIT for a key conference match-up on Saturday (2 p.m.). Springfield will host Babson College that same day at 1 p.m.
Charlie Brock in 2009-10 will enter his 12th season as the head coach at Springfield College. Brock’s achievements as a coach are certainly impressive, as he has taken three schools to the NCAA Division III Tournament and has an overall, 29-year record of 394-363 for a winning percentage of .520.
