Women's Basketball Downs Clark University, 63-56, in NEWMAC Play

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., January 17, 2007 – Springfield College sophomore center Lauren O’Connor (Valhalla, N.Y.) scored four of her 11 points within the final three minutes of regulation to break a 53-all tie as the Pride defeated Clark University, 63-56, in a close New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) contest this evening in Blake Arena.

O’Connor netted 11 points and grabbed seven rebounds as SC improves to 6-9 overall and 2-3 in the NEWMAC this season. Sophomore forward Corey Finch (Hanover, Pa.) scored 12 points on 3-of-6 shooting from the floor, as she also registered a game-high eight rebounds and added four steals. Junior guard Christine Cotter (Stoughton, Mass.) also scored 12 points and recorded four steals.

The Cougars of Clark University fall to 5-10 overall on the season with the loss and drop to 1-4 in conference play. Clark was led by sophomore guard Sarah Roderigue with 14 points, four assists and four steals. Senior center Ashley Auclair scored 11 points and picked up seven caroms. Sophomore guard Sara Hagstrom led all players with seven assists on the night to go along with six rebounds.

In a see-saw first half, Clark University opened up its largest lead of the game with 7:20 left by going on a 9-0 run. The Pride then closed the opening stanza on a 13-8 run to pull within four points (33-29) at the half.

In the early stages of the second half, SC kept the momentum going with a 12-6 run to take a 41-39 lead. The game was extremely tight for most of the second stanza, however, as neither team led by more than four points until the very end. With the score knotted at 53 apiece and just 3:07 left in regulation, O’Connor put the Pride ahead for good with two buckets in the paint to take a 57-53 advantage with 1:15 left. SC then finished out the remainder of the game by going 6-for-7 from the free throw line for the 63-56 victory.

The Pride will next travel to Cambridge, Mass., for a NEWMAC tilt against MIT on Saturday (Jan. 20) at 3:00 p.m.
