

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., July 31, 2006 – Springfield College’s 2006 men’s gymnastics team has finished 10th overall in this year’s National Academic Team Championship Standings, in an announcement made by The College Gymnastics Association back on July 24th, out of the College of William and Mary.
Throughout the past academic year, the Pride gymnasts combined for an impressive team grade-point average (GPA) of 3.022 to capture tenth overall in the national standings. Stanford University won its fourth national academic team title with a 3.567 GPA. MIT finished second with a 3.192 average, and William and Mary rounded out the top three at 3.186.
In the same announcement made by The College Gymnastics Association, SC senior Andrew Malaby (West Warwick, R.I.), who was this year’s recipient of an NCAA Post-Graduate Scholarship, was named a first team Academic All-American Scholar-Athlete. Malaby boasted a 3.855 GPA to earn first team academic honors. Pride sophomore Matthew Davis (Southboro, Mass.) joined Malaby on The College Gymnastics Association’s first team All-American Scholar-Athlete list with a 3.642 grade-point average.
Four other members of SC’s men’s gymnastics squad were named second team All-American Scholar-Athletes, in sophomore Steven Swider (Altamont, N.Y.) with a 3.390 GPA, freshman Harrison Reisweber (Amherst, N.Y.) with a 3.266 grade-point average, freshman Ken Sloanhoffer (New Windsor, N.Y.) with a 3.254 GPA, and sophomore John Ferreira (Naugatuck, Conn.) with a 3.228 grade-point average.
Overall, just 55 gymnasts in the entire nation were named first team All-American Scholar-Athletes, as 56 other gymnasts were named All-American Scholar-Athlete second-team selections.
Entering his 28th season as head men's gymnastics coach, Dr. Steve Posner is recognized as one of the most outstanding gymnastics coaches in the East. Posner, who has coached 135 All-Americans and 18 National Champions, led the Pride to another successful season in 2009. He has been named the NACGA Eastern Region Coach of the Year in each of the last two years.
