CAMBRIDGE, Mass., September 30, 2006 – Melissa Weinstein and Jessica Sousa won singles matches for Springfield College, but in the end, the MIT women’s tennis team proved to be too much for the Pride in winning a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) match this afternoon, 7-2.
For Springfield, Weinstein, a sophomore from Allentown, Pa., won her match at No. 3 singles, defeating Yi Wang, 6-3, 6-4. Sousa, a junior from Falmouth, Mass., won her match at No. 5 singles, defeating Joanna MacKay, 4-6, 6-1, 7-6 (7-2 in the tiebreaker).
Meanwhile, MIT was victorious in all three of its doubles matches, and at No. 1, 2, 4, and 6 singles.
With the victory, the Engineers are now 4-1 overall and 4-0 in NEWMAC play. Springfield is now 1-3 overall and 0-3 in conference play.
Up next, the Pride plays at Mount Holyoke College in a league match on Tuesday, October 3rd, at 4:00 p.m.
