Women's Basketball Picks Up 71-63 Road Victory at Colby-Sawyer College

Box Score/Play-by-Play

NEW LONDON, N.H., December 12, 2006 - Springfield College junior guard Tara McCarthy (Bristol, R.I.) led four Pride players in double figures with a game-high 24 points on 8-of-15 shooting from the floor as SC defeated the Chargers of Colby-Sawyer College, 71-63, in non-conference action this evening at Coffin Fieldhouse.

The win improves the Pride to 4-4 overall on the season as SC is now off for its winter break and will not resume play until it hosts the 2007 Holiday Inn-Naismith Classic at Blake Arena on January 2nd and 3rd. The Pride hands the Chargers just their second loss of the season as Colby-Sawyer now falls to 6-2 overall on its young campaign.

McCarthy vaulted SC to its fourth win of the season, netting eight of her 15 field-goal attempts, four of her six shots from beyond the arc, and all four of her free throws. The junior guard also dished out a team-best four assists and collected three rebounds, two steals, and one block.

Sophomore forward Corey Finch (Hanover, Pa.) added her third double-double of the year with 14 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Another Pride sophomore forward, Liz Brosseau (Franklin, Mass.), compiled a career-best 14 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the field, as junior co-captain Christine Cotter (Stoughton, Mass.) was the other member of SC to register a double-figure night with 12 points.

In the opening half, the Pride led by as many as 11 points after a McCarthy three-pointer that put SC up, 24-13, with 5:47 left before intermission. The Chargers responded with a 13-4 run in the final 5:47, however, to make it just a two-point game at the break (28-26) in favor of the Pride.

Colby-Sawyer continued its run in the early stages of the second stanza, leading by as many as eight points (40-32) with 15:46 left in regulation. SC came back with an 8-0 run of its own to tie the game at 40 apiece with 14:41 left, as the two squads traded buckets for the next 11 minutes.

With the contest tied at 60-all and just 3:30 to go on the clock, the Pride used an 11-3 to close out the game. Cotter scored seven of her 12 points in the final two and a half minutes of play to help seal the victory for SC.

When the Pride returns to action after the New Year, it will host Norwich University on Tuesday, January 2nd, beginning at 1:00 p.m. Union College and Bowdoin College will then meet at 3:00 p.m., with the consolation game held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 3rd, and the championship game slated for 5:30 p.m. All games will take place at SC's Blake Arena.
