Three SC Athletes Earn NEWMAC Recognition

SPRINGFIELD Mass., April 7, 2005 – Springfield College junior Justin Freitas (East Providence, R.I.) was named New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference Player of the Week in men’s tennis, while freshman Denise Fumicello (Brockton, Mass.) was named Co-NEWMAC Player of the Week and senior pitcher Brittany Dielmans (Middlebury, Conn.) earned NEWMAC Pitcher of the Week honors in women’s softball.

Freitas led the Pride to a 7-2 victory over Western New England College last Tuesday (Mar. 31). He posted a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles, and recorded an 8-4 victory in the No. 2 doubles position.

In six games last week, Fumicello went 11-for-22 to hit .500 along with three doubles, four runs scored and three runs batted in. She was 3-for-4 with two doubles, two runs scored and a RBI in a victory over Coast Guard, Friday (April 1), and was 2-for-4 with a RBI in the Pride's win over Wheaton on Sunday (April 3). She also was 2-for-3 with a run, a RBI and a double in SC’s win over Eastern Conn. on Wednesday (Mar. 30).

Dielemans went 2-1 on the week, including her first career no-hitter against Eastern Connecticut on Wednesday (Mar. 30). In three complete-game appearances, she compiled a 1.29 ERA, 13 strikeouts, and allowed only four walks and three earned runs in 21 innings of work.
