Men's Soccer Plays WPI To 1-1 Draw

Boxscore

WORCESTER, Mass., October 8, 2005 - Springfield College sophomore back Joe Greenwood (Pelham, N.H.) netted his first score of the season in the 42nd minute of action (41:42) as the Pride played New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) foe, Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), to a 1-1 double overtime tie in a downpour on Saturday afternoon, October 8, in Worcester, Mass.

After a WPI score in the 32nd minute of play (31:13) off the foot of senior co-captain Matt Young, the Engineers took an early 1-0 lead in the opening half. SC answered back quickly, however, as Greenwood scored off a cross in front of the WPI goal that was deflected into the back of the net, tying the score at one apiece just before the break.

Despite out-shooting WPI 9-6 in the match, the Pride was unable to come up with a game-winning score as the contest ended in a 1-1 draw. SC junior keeper Ryan Driscoll (Wilmington, Del.) made four saves in goal to help seal the tie.

After this afternoon's match, SC now stands at 1-9-1 overall and 0-3-1 in NEWMAC play. The Pride will next travel to Williams College for a non-conference match on Wednesday afternoon, October 12, for a 4:15 p.m. start.
