Wheaton College Knocks Off Men's Basketball, 61-54, In NEWMAC Tournament Quarterfinals

Box Score/Play-by-Play

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., February 21, 2007 – Wheaton College senior guard Brian Zukowski poured in a game-high 28 points on 7-of-12 shooting from the floor, 4-of-7 shooting from three-point land, and 10-of-11 shooting from the free throw line as the No. 6 Lyons upset No. 3 Springfield College, 61-54, this evening in the first round of the 2007 New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men’s basketball tournament at Blake Arena.

Wheaton improves its overall record to 11-14 on the season with the victory and advances to play in the semifinals against No. 7 Coast Guard on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 24) at top-seeded WPI’s Harrington Auditorium in a 2:30 p.m. start. The Pride ends its season with a 12-14 overall record.

SC junior forward Gregg Daly (Farmington, Conn.) came off the bench to record a double-double of 13 points and 11 rebounds to go along with a game-best three blocks, but the Pride shot just 30.3 percent (20-66) from the field as a team and just 26.7 percent (4-15) from beyond the arc. Freshman forward Pat Crean (Sleepy Hollow, N.Y.) led SC in scoring with 14 points and added six rebounds.

The Pride opened the contest on a 12-6 run capped by a three from freshman guard Ryan Blackmon (Stamford, Conn.) at the 9:17 mark. Both teams struggled from the floor throughout the entire opening half, however, as the score was just 16-15 at the break in favor of SC.

The game was back-and-forth to start the second half, and with the score tied at 24 apiece and 13:31 on the clock, the Lyons started to mount a rally. Wheaton went on a 15-4 run capped by a Zukowski trey to take an 11-point lead (39-28) with 6:09 left in regulation. The Pride quickly got back into the game by going on a 9-0 run to pull within just two points (39-37) off a Crean lay-up with 4:22 left, but Zukowski put the final stamp on the game for Wheaton. The senior scored 20 of his game-high 28 points in the second half on 3-of-4 shooting from deep and 9-of-10 shooting from the charity stripe.
