SPRINGFIELD, Mass., May 14, 2005 – Wesleyan University junior midfielder Glenn Adams (Norwalk, Conn.) totaled two goals, including the eventual game winner, and three assists as the No. 12 Cardinals made up a 7-2 deficit with eight unanswered goals to stun the No. 9 Pride, 10-7, in the second round of the NCAA Division III Men’s Lacrosse Tournament this evening on Benedum Field.
Wesleyan (13-5) advances to play at Middlebury College on Wednesday (May 18) in the tournament quarterfinals. It will be a rematch of the NESCAC Tournament Championship game won by Middlebury, 9-5, last Sunday (May 8). The loss snaps a 12-game win-streak for Springfield (12-5).
Pride senior midfielder
Mark Maitland (Salem, Mass.) opened the scoring with a tally at 8:18, before junior Mike Walsh (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) answered with the first of Wesleyan’s three man-up goals in the game to make the score, 1-1, with 3:45 to play in the first quarter. The first of three goals on the night by senior attackman
Shawn Cofrin (Londonderry, N.H.) at 1:16 gave the Pride a 2-1 lead after the first quarter of play.
After a man-up tally by Wesleyan junior midfielder Mike Vitulano (Fairfield, Conn.) tied the game with 9:37 on the clock, SC seemed to take command of the game with four unanswered goals, including a pair by Cofrin, to forge ahead to a 6-2 halftime advantage. SC tallied two goals in only five seconds during the run as Cofrin’s third goal of the game at 5:43 followed junior attackman
Taylor Brown’s (Portsmouth, R.I.) score at 5:48.
Senior midfielder
Derek Pedrick’s (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) second goal of the game gave the Pride a 7-2 edge with 13:03 to play in the third quarter, but it was the final goal SC would score the rest of the game. Senior attackman Chris Knacke (Lynbrook, N.Y) scored the first of his two goals at 12:35, Vitulano tallied his second goal at 11:46, and junior attackman Jordan Funt (Setauket, N.Y.) pulled the Cardinals within two with a tally at 6:03 to make the score, 7-5, after the third quarter.
Knacke’s second goal came at 12:54, before a tally by freshman midfielder Alex Kaufman (Lake Oswego, Ore.) tied the game with 11:54 to play in the game. Two-straight Adams goals at 4:24 and 1:46 pushed Wesleyan into the lead for good, before a tally by junior midfielder Jeff McLaren (Essex Junction, Vt.) sealed the game for the Cardinals in their first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance.
