#14 Field Hockey Upends Smith, 5-1, in Conference Play

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (October 2, 2007) – Led by Jane Kelleher’s three goals and one assist, the Springfield College field hockey team defeated Smith College, 5-1, this evening in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference game played at the Pride’s Stagg Field (formerly known as Benedum Field).
With the win, Springfield, ranked #14 in the latest National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division III poll released earlier today, is now 10-2 overall on the season, 2-1 in the conference. It was Springfield’s fourth straight victory. Meanwhile, Smith is now 2-7 overall, 1-2 in league play.
Eileen Jenkins, a senior forward from Gorham, Me., scored the game’s first goal just 20 seconds into the match, giving SC a 1-0 lead. That tally was assisted by Kelleher, a junior midfielder from Chatham, Mass., who is this week’s reigning NEWMAC Player of the Week.
Springfield was destined to take a 4-0 lead at the half. Kelleher scored her first goal just seven minutes into the contest, giving SC a 2-0 advantage.
The margin was upped to three when Kelleher scored with 17:33 left in the first half. Then sophomore forward Allie Baier (Farmington, Conn.) swelled the lead to 4-0 with 6:59 left in the half.
Smith’s lone bright spot of the night came with 7:04 left in the game when sophomore forward Natalie Wickles (Hatfield, Mass.) scored.
But Kelleher almost immediately improved the margin to four goals when she scored her third of the night with 5:15 remaining.
For the Pride, senior goalkeeper Emma Kaplan (Ridgefield, Conn.) registered one save in 35 minutes of action (first half). Senior Julia Kincade (Durham, N.H.) played the second half, but did not record a save. For Smith, sophomore Margaret Winter (Purchase, N.Y.) was credited with 10 saves in 70 minutes of action.
Springfield will next play Saturday (Oct. 6) at MIT at 1:00 pm. Smith will next play at Wellesley Sunday (Oct. 7) at 1:00 pm.

After only five years as head coach of the Pride, Melissa Rogers, has continued the SC tradition of winning on the field hockey turf, posting an impressive 94-24 record, good for a winning percentage of .796 at the helm of her alma mater.
