Men's Soccer Drops Close, 2-1 Match With Amherst

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., Sept. 28, 2005 -- Springfield College sophomore forward Chad Bonnell (Hazlet, N.J.) tallied his first goal of the season, but the Pride fell to Amherst College, 2-1, Wednesday evening, September 28, in Springfield, Mass.

The Lord Jeffs (4-1-2) took a 1-0 lead in the twelfth minute of play on an unassisted goal by Taylor Downs. SC junior Matt Lee (Lincoln, R.I.) appeared to have tied the match for SC with no time remaining in the first half, however, this goal was waved off and the Pride (1-7) trailed by one at the break.

In the second half, Amherst junior Rob Madden scored in the 53rd minute to put the Lord Jeffs up 2-0. With seven minutes and 22 seconds remaining in the match, Bonnell cut the lead in half. Bonnell’s goal was assisted by sophomore Stephen Croft (Red Hook, N.Y.). SC pressured the goal of the Lord Jeffs but failed to score, resulting in the 2-1 final.

Pride goalkeeper sophomore B.J. Sturdivant (Bear, Del.) stopped seven shots while Amherst goalkeeper Greg Lockwood recorded two saves.

SC travels to Clark University for a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) contest this Saturday, October 1, at 1:00 pm.
