SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- October 9, 2007 -- Paced behind a pair of goals from Caitlin Sawczuk (Plainville, Conn.), the No. 25 Springfield College women’s soccer team rolled past MIT, 6-0, on Brock-Affleck Field at the Irv Schmid Sports Complex on Tuesday evening in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference action. With the win, the Pride improves to 11-2, 4-1 in conference play while the Engineers drop to 8-4, 3-2.
Springfield, who is ranked 25th in the latest D3kicks.com poll, outshot the Engineers 25-4 in the game and have now outscored its opponents 39-1 this season at home.
Springfield wasted no time tallying the first goal of the game as Jillian Pereira (East Providence, R.I.) ripped a shot from 25 yards out into the top of the net past the outstretched arms of MIT goalie Stephanie Brenman just 1:42 into the match. Lauren Peltier (Agawam, Mass.) then tallied the Pride’s second goal of the game after she finished up a rebound from six yards out at the 21:19 mark. Sawczuk then recorded her first goal of the match 36 seconds later to conclude Springfield’s scoring in the first half.
Sawczuk opened up the second half scoring with a tally just 3:24 into the stanza to give Springfield a 4-0 lead. Nicole Hanewich (Smithfield, R.I.) netted her team-leading 13th goal of the season at the 55:25 mark before Suzanne Silva (Ludlow, Mass.) wrapped up the scoring for the Pride 3:15 later.
Sue Jenney (Agawam, Mass.) and Katie Delude (Chicopee, Mass.) combined for the shutout on the evening.
The Pride returns to action on Saturday when it travels to take on conference-foe Smith . Kick-off is slated for 1:00 p.m.
