Head Coach Kathy Mangano

Kathy ManganoKathy Mangano, who will be entering her 19th season coaching at her alma mater in 2008, is one of the top coaches in New England. The three-time conference Coach of the Year has won more games than any coach in the program’s history (429), and ranks among the national leaders in victories among active Division III coaches. Since the Pride moved to Division III in 1996, SC has posted a 302-202-1 (.599) mark, with four teams advancing to the NCAA tournament.

Mangano has guided her teams to three 30-win campaigns since 2000 and a 41-win season in ‘01. SC has made four post-season appearances in nine seasons, including berths in the NCAA Tournament in 1999 and 2000. The Pride also reached the national tournament in 1996 and ’97. Two of Mangano’s former stars, All-Americans Nan Duga and Ali Gerrish, rank among the leaders in Division III history in several statistical categories.

Mangano’s clubs have been very impressive since joining the NEWMAC for the 1999 season. In conference play, SC posted 14-2 marks in NEWMAC regular-season games in 2000, 2001 and 2003. The Pride reached the championship game of the NEWMAC Tournament from 2000 to 2003, and did so again in 2006. In 2007, SC finished 12-4 in conference regular-season play and was seeded #1 in the NEWMAC post-season tourney. In fact, Springfield won its first-ever NEWMAC regular-season title in 2007. And in each of the past two years, the softball team has earned SC's highly-coveted Pride Challenge Award. Mangano was the NEWMAC Coach of the Year in 2000 and 2001 after leading SC to 71 wins over those two seasons.

As a student-athlete at Springfield College, Mangano was a four-year starter at first base and a team captain in her junior and senior seasons. She posted a career batting average of .349 in 136 games and, in 1985, she hit .407 and was selected to the Converse All-America and All-New England First-Teams. She also received the Massasoit Award as SC’s top female team sport athlete and was a two-time first-team conference all-star. She helped SC to a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances (1983 and 1986).

She earned her bachelor’s degree in secondary physical education in 1986 and her master’s degree in teaching and administration in 1988 at Springfield College. Kathy also earned her doctorate's degree (Doctor of Education, Ed.D.) in May, 2007 from the University of Massachusetts. Mangano also serves as an associate professor of physical education and skills coordinator at SC.
