The Springfield College softball program has been successful for many years. And Kathy Mangano ‘86, SC’s all-time winningest head coach and two-time New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Coach of the Year, plans to keep that success rolling right along.
In her 18-year head coaching career at Springfield College, Mangano’s teams have won 20 games or more a total of 14 times. Her 2001 squad amassed 41 victories, finishing 41-10 that season. She also piloted her teams to 30 victories in 2000 and 33 more wins in 2003.
In 2007, under Kathy’s direction, SC finished 25-14, and was seeded #1 in the NEWMAC post-season tourney. In fact, Springfield won the NEWMAC regular-season title this past year for the very first time. In addition, it was the softball team that won SC's highly-coveted Pride Challenge Award for the second year in a row. In 2006, SC finished 25-20, reaching the NEWMAC post-season tournament championship game. During that season, Mangano became just the 26th coach in NCAA Division III softball history to record 400 victories, doing so with a doubleheader sweep at MIT. Only four other active coaches in New England Division III have more victories than Mangano. Overall, Kathy’s record at her alma mater is 429-353-1, good for a very positive .549 winning percentage.
Also in 2007, four SC players received post-season awards. Freshman catcher Michelle Wlosek and junior second baseman Denise Fumicello were named All-NEWMAC First Team, while sophomore DP Danielle Spiro was named All-NEWMAC Second Team. Wlosek was also named an NESCA Division III First Team All-Star. At the Pride's Annual Awards Night, Wlosek won SC's Top Female Freshman Team Award. In addition, junior pitcher Stephanie Blackman was named winner of the school's Female Unsung Hero Award. In 2006, three SC players also reaped plenty of awards. Fumicello was named All-NEWMAC First Team, and All-NFCA Second Team. Designated Player Sarah Bagierek was named NFCA First Team, and All-NEWMAC Second Team. Catcher Amanda Johansson was named All-NEWMAC First Team, and All-NFCA Second Team. All three were named NEISCA honorable mention. Fumicello was also named Springfield College’s Sophomore Female Team Athlete of the Year.
