Springfield College and basketball are nearly synonymous. After all, Springfield College is “The Birthplace of Basketball”. And the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame is located in downtown Springfield, Massachusetts, just 10 minutes away from this campus, where the original Basketball Hall of Fame was first housed.
It is safe to say that no other college has had as great an influence on the game as Springfield College. No less than nine individuals affiliated with SC have been inducted into the Hall of Fame, including inventor Dr. James Naismith. Others include John Bunn, Dr. Luther Gulick, Dr. Ferenc Hepp ’35, R. William Jones ’28, Ed Hickox ’14, Arthur Schabinger ’15, Amos Alonzo Stagg, and Dr. Ed Steitz G’48, ’63 D.P.E., all major contributors to the game.
Current Head Coach Charlie Brock, who notched his 350th coaching victory at SC during the 2005-2006 season, continues to elevate his name to new levels. In 2006, Brock was selected to two very prestigious positions – the Board of Directors in the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC), and the NCAA Division III Men’s Basketball Committee. He also continues to be a member of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Rules Committee, which made national news in May, 2007 when it announced that the men's collegiate three-point line will be extended from 19' 9" to 20' 9" at the start of the 2008-09 season .
During the 2005-06 season, then-senior guard Derek Yvon became the school’s all-time leading scorer. A local native from East Longmeadow, Yvon finished with 2,101 career points, surpassing Hassan Robinson ’95 and his total of 2,003. A co-captain who averaged a league-leading 23.0 ppg and became just the 17th player in New England Division III history to score 2,000 career points, Yvon was named All-Northeast Region First Team by D3hoops.com for the second straight year, and also First-Team All-NEWMAC for the third straight year.
In 2006-07, SC was led by senior forward Damian Farley, senior guard Anthony Pizzo, who broke SC's all-time career assist record (Pizzo now has 523, breaking the old mark of 508 by Ramses Kelly 1987-91), and junior guard Jamaal Gibbs. Gibbs was named Second Team All-NEWMAC. Gibbs and forward/center Gregg Daly will lead the Pride in 2007-08.
