Women's Volleyball Earns NEWVA Academic Team Award

BRISTOL, R.I. - February 20, 2009 - The New England Women’s Volleyball Association announced today its recipients of the NEWVA Academic Team Award. Fifteen teams earned the honor, attaining a team-average of at least a 3.3 GPA during the fall semester.

Ilkson, Lively, and Dearing Continue To Rack Up Regional Honors

Heather Lively, and head coach
Joel Dearing continued to rack up awards, this time on the regional scale on Wednesday evening. Both Ilkson and Lively were named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) New England All-Region Team, while Dearing was honored as the 2008 AVCA New England Region Coach of the Year.

With 906 victories through the 2008 campaign and with 36 consecutive winning seasons, the Springfield College women’s volleyball program is one of the most competitive in the nation.
The winningest coach in the history of the program, head coach
Joel Dearing ’79, has led his alma mater to 10 post-season tournaments, including seven NCAA Tournaments, three berths in the national quarterfinals, and seven conference titles.
The 2009 squad hopes to return to the NCAA Tournament after a sensational 2008 campaign that saw the Pride rattle off a 32-5 record as it won the 2008 NEWMAC Championship. Paced by NEWMAC and New England Player of the Year
Heather Lively, Springfield won 18 matches in a row during the season, while Dearing and
Kim Giaquinto took home NEWMAC Coach of the Year and Co-Rookie of the Year accolades, respectively.

Head Coach Joel Dearing

Joel Dearing will enter his 21st season as head women's volleyball coach at his alma mater in the fall of 2009. Dearing is regarded nationally as one of the sport’s best coaches and he has the resume to prove it. Dearing ranks in the top-10 in Division III history with a 670-298 (.692) overall mark in 28 seasons as a women’s volleyball coach.
