Men's Swimming and Diving Competes In Final Day of NCAA Championships

Brian Sobel finished eighth in the country in the the three-meter diving competition in the final day of the 2009 NCAA Division III Men's Swimming and Diving Championships.

About The Team
After another solid showing at the NCAA Championships in 2009, the Springfield College men's swimming and diving team continued to prove it was one of the top programs in the country.
The Pride, which finished third in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) in 2009, have a handful of returning national qualifiers upon which to build for the upcoming year.
Brian Sobel was tabbed the NEWMAC Diver of the Year in 2009 and placed third in the one-meter competition at the NCAA's as he earned a pair of All-America honors. Fellow diver
Matt Fitzgerald also picked up a pair of honorable mention All-America accolades at nationals. In the pool, the Pride will look to
Ryan Mackstutis,
Andrew Blakesley, and
Brian Way for continued success in the upcoming campaign. Newcomers
Nolan Manley,
Tim Ramos, and
Travis Morse will make an impact in their first years for Springfield, while
Kenny Pancoast will only improve an already strong diving unit.
The 2009-10 men’s swimming and diving team at Springfield College is headed by Coach
John Taffe who enters his 21st season directing the Pride. Nine Pride squads have finished among the top 20 teams in Division III over the past 12 years, as Taffe guided the Pride to its first-ever NEWMAC championship in 2005. That earned him NEWMAC Coach of the Year honors that year.
The diving team is led by Coach
Peter Avdoulos in his 25th season. The 1985 graduate of SC was named the 2005 NCAA Division III Men’s Diving Coach of the Year. He was also named the NEWMAC Men’s Diving Coach of the Year in ’05, ’06, '08 and '09.

John Taffe enters his 21st season in 2009-2010 as the head coach of the men's and women's swimming teams at Springfield College. Under Taffe’s leadership, the Pride has returned to its status as one of the best collegiate swimming and diving programs in Division III.

Diving Coach Peter Avdoulos

Peter Avdoulos is regarded as one of the top diving coaches in the nation, and will enter his 25th season as the diving coach for both the men's and women's programs in 2009-2010. The current NEWMAC Men's Diving Coach of the Year, Avdoulos has coached countless All-New England and All-American divers, as well as several National Champions.
