Baseball Falls At WNEC, 11-2, In Non-Conference Tilt

Springfield, Mass. - March 31, 2009 - The Springfield College baseball team dropped a 11-2 decision at Western New England on Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference game.

WNEC improves to 11-7 on the season, while the Pride fall to 3-13 after losing its ninth-straight game.

Sophomore Evan Michaud pitched seven strong innings and senior left fielder Mike Beck had three hits to lead the Golden Bears to victory as they played their 18th game in the last 18 days.

Michaud, a right-hander, allowed only five hits with four strikeouts and two walks in raising his record to 2-1. Both of the runs scored against him were unearned. Beck scored three runs and had a stolen base to lead the 13-hit attack.

Junior first baseman Joe Griglun added a single, double, run scored, and knocked in two runs with a pair of sacrifice flies. Senior center fielder Chris Newell contributed a pair of singles with two RBI, a run scored, and stolen base.

Freshman catcher Jason LeClerc chipped-in with a pair of singles, RBI, and two runs scored.

WNEC scored four times in the third and three times in the fourth for an early 7-0 lead.

Springfield scored both of its runs in the fifth before the Golden Bears completed the scoring with four runs in the seventh.

Senior shortstop Jamie Mackie had two singles while junior left fielder Joe Kropa had a double and sacrifice fly for the Pride. Freshman second baseman Mike Corletta had a single, run scored, and stolen base. Sophomore Steve Forbes took the loss.

Springfield committed four errors, which led to three unearned runs.

The Pride return to action on Wednesday evening as it travels to take on local-foe Elms at 7:00 pm.
