Wrestling Finishes Fourth at NEWA Championships
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- February 24, 2008 -- The Springfield College wrestling team finished in fourth place out of 15 teams in New England Wrestling Assocation Championships that concluded Sunday after two days of competition.
Rhode Island College was crowned the champion with 121 points and was closely followed by Johson & Wales with 116 points. Williams College finished with 105.5 points, while the Pride ended with 89 points.
Despite finishing second in the 184 pound weight class, senior
Elliot Smith (Richville, N.Y.) was chosen as a wild card selection to the 2008 NCAA Division II Nationals. Teammate
Jake Tyler (Gouverneur, N.Y.) was selected as an alternate to attend the Nationals. Tyler finished second in the 165 pound weight class.
Six wrestlers were tabbed as All-New England selections via placing in the top six in their weight class. Along with Smith and Tyler,
Jamie Sgaglione (No. Massapequa, N.Y.) at 141, senior
Chris DeBlock (Sparta, N.J.) at 149, senior
Greg Dussol (Amston, Conn.) at 197, and junior
Chris Brown (East Hartford, Conn.) at heavyweight were all recognized as All-New England.
Smith will move on to compete at the NCAA Division III Nationals at Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on March 7-8.

Former Springfield College All-American Daryl Arroyo will be entering his 19th season as the head wrestling coach at his alma mater in 2008-09. Under his tutelage, the Springfield College wrestling program has posted a 265-141-6 overall dual-meet record, good for an outstanding .650 winning percentage.
