Springfield Hosts 20th Annual Doug Parker Invitational

2009 Doug Parker Invitational Complete Brackets

Springfield, Mass. -- November 21, 2009 -- Springfield College hosted the 20th Annual Doug Parker Wrestling Invitational at Blake Arena this afternoon and this evening. Here are the final team results and a list of champions.

Williams College won the event with 136 points, just ahead of second-place Brockport at 133.5 and third-place Wesleyan at 125.5. The Most Outstanding Wrestler was Bridgewater State's John Marsh at 149 pounds.

Springfield finished fourth in the team standings with a score of 119 points. Eddie Giron and Blaze Chatham both finished in third place as individuals with each finishing the tournament with a 5-1 overall record. Giron began the tournament with three straight victories, reaching the 133 lb. classification semifinal before losing to the eventual champion, Travis Drappi of RIC. Giron bounced back by winning his next two matches.

Other top performers for Springfield included sophomore Ryan McGilvray at 149 lbs., who finished in fourth place, and freshman Joe Ortiz at 125 lbs, who defeated teammate Joe Grippi in the fifth place match.

Springfield will hit the mats again on Friday, December 4th when it travels to compete in the Petrofes Invitational hosted at Messiah College in Pennsylvania.

Who is Doug Parker? For the record, he is a long-time former head wrestling coach at Springfield College. A 1951 SC graduate, he spent 41 years at his alma mater, including 35 years as the head westling coach, compiling an overall record of 485-159-11. He never had a losing season. In February, 2009, he was recognized as the New England Wrestling Association "Man of the Year" during the NEWA Tournament held at Springfield College.
