Rein and Mantie Collect NEWMAC Weekly Honors

Rein and Mantie Collect NEWMAC Weekly Honors Springfield, Mass. - November 2, 2009 - After leading their teams to an impressive week of play, including wins in their conference tournament quarterfinals, both Morgan Rein and Katie Mantie were honored by the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC). Rein was chosen as the field hockey player of the week, while Mantie took home women's soccer player of the week honors.

For Rein, a Mystic, Conn. native, she tallied four goals and an assist in three games for Springfield last week. Rein scored one goal in a 3-2 win over Smith and then tacked on the game-winning tally and an assist in a 2-1 non-conference victory over Plymouth State. In the NEWMAC Tournament quarterfinals, Rein registered a pair of goals as the Pride topped WPI, 5-1.

For the season, the senior leads the team with 11 goals and 12 assists for 34 points.

Rein and the Pride look to win its sixth-straight conference title as it travels to top-seeded Wellesley for a NEWMAC Tournament semifinal contest on Saturday morning.

Mantie, a Wallingford, Conn. product, produced an incredible performance against Smith in a mid-week game. The sophomore tallied four goals in the opening 27 minutes as she paced Springfield to a 5-0 victory. In an overtime win over Clark in the NEWMAC Tournament, it was Mantie's shot that was initially saved before teammate Sue Silva rebounded home the game-winning marker.

Mantie leads the team in scoring with 18 points off eight goals and two assists. She will join the Pride on Saturday morning as they take on top-seeded Wellesley in the conference semifinals in hopes of defending their conference crown.
