Late Tally Lifts Coast Guard Past Men's Soccer, 1-0

Springfield, Mass. - October 31, 2009 - The Springfield College men's soccer team dropped its regular-season finale in a tough 1-0 loss to visiting Coast Guard on Saturday afternoon in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action.

Springfield, 5-12-1, 1-5, will now enter the NEWMAC Tournament as the seventh seed, and will travel to take on second-seeded Wheaton College on Wednesday (Nov. 4). Coast Guard, 8-9, 3-3, earned the three seed and will take on sixth-seeded Clark.

Despite having a 14-12 advantage in shots, including an 8-4 edge in the first half, Springfield was unable to muster a goal for the ninth game this season. Coast Guard finished with an 8-6 advantage in corner kicks.

The lone goal of the match came in the 80th minute off the foot of Jacob Larsen. Larsen stepped over a a free kick from just outside the box and ripped his attempt that deflected off a Springfield defender and into the upper corner of the goal.

Tim Olah recorded five saves to earn the shutout win, while Chris Walton made four saves on the way to the loss.
