No. 20 Williams Takes Down Men's Soccer, 5-0

Chris Walton Box Score

Williamstown, Mass. - October 14, 2009 - The Williams College men's soccer team scored three goals in the first half and never looked back as it defeated visiting Springfield College, 5-0, in a non-conference game on Wednesday afternoon.

The Ephs, which entered the game ranked 20th in the latest NSCAA national poll, improve to 9-1-1 on the year, while the loss drops Springfield to 4-8-1 on the season.

Chris Walton was peppered with 36 shots in the game as the Pride suffered its most lopsided loss of the season. The first-year netminder was tremendous, as he routinely snuffed several scoring chances, including a late Eph penalty kick, en route to a career-best 17 saves. The matchup against the Ephs was the third nationally-ranked team of the season. For the game, the Ephs owned a 36-6 advantage in shots and a 7-2 edge in corner kicks.

The hosts struck first just 3:30 into the game as Conor Smith scored his first of two goals of the afternoon. Smith found the back of the net just under 10 minutes later at the 13:11 mark to give Williams a 2-0 edge. Another goal off a penalty kick by Pierre Meloty-Kapella in the 32nd minute proved to be the final goal of the opening 45 minutes as Williams went into the half up 3-0.

In the second stanza, Williams continued to pour on the offensive pressure, getting off 19 shots in the half. Gaston Kelly made it 4-0 with a strike off a feed from Charles Romero in the 58th minute. An unassisted strike from Daniel Morrisroe in the 74th minute accounted for the final goal of the contest as Williams went on to the 5-0 victory.

Than Finan and Andrew Lyons-Berg combined to make one save for the shutout victory.

The Pride will hit the road on Saturday for a key conference clash at first-place Babson. Kick off is slated for 3:00 pm.
