Men's Swimming and Diving Cruises Past Wheaton and Keene State

Norton, Mass. - November 22, 2008 - The Springfield College men's swimming and diving team swept the competition today in a tri-meet at Wheaton College. Springfield handled Wheaton by a score of 226.5-67.5 and edged Keene State, 176-124.

Springfield opened up the meet with a win in the 200 medley relay as Jerry Cummiskey, Ryan Mackstutis, Brian Way, and Matt Manoni touched in 1:40.17.

Andrew Blakesley was spectacular for the Pride with three individual wins. He took first in 200 free in 1:48.48 before evetually claiming the 100 free in 49.05. He also touched first in the 500 free in 4:53.87.

Way continued to make waves on the Springfield swimming scene as the freshman notched wins in the 200 fly, touching in 2:02.53, and the 100 fly in 54.00.

Manoni took the 50 free in 22.51 and Mackstutis picked up an individual win in the 200 breast in 2:16.10.

On the diving boards, Matt Fitzgerald took first on the one-meter with a 256.80. On the three-meter, Brian Sobel tallied the fifth-highest score in the country to date as he tallied a 296.55 for the victory. His score met the national qualifying standards for the NCAA Championships this spring.

Springfield closed out the meet as it cruised to victory in the 200 free as Manoni, Ryan Mackstutis, Scott Mackstutis, and Blakesley finished in 1:28.51.

The Pride will take on Middlebury on Sunday afternoon at 12:00 pm at the Art Linkletter Natatorium.
