Men's Soccer Falls at Tufts, 2-0

Medford, Mass. - September 23, 2008 - Goals by sophomore Alex Lach and junior Dan Schoening in the second half lifted the Tufts University men's soccer team to a 2-0 non-conference win over visiting Springfield College under the lights at Bello Field on Tuesday night.

The Jumbos, off to their best start since the 2002 season, are now 4-1-1 overall and are undefeated in their last three games. The Pride (2-4-1) dropped their third straight and took their fourth loss in the last five games.

Springfield had the better of the play in the first 45, putting six shots towards the Tufts net. In his first action of the season, Tufts junior goalkeeper Pat Tonelli made four saves in the first half. Tufts had just three shots at Springfield keeper Kevin Leahy (Cheshire, Conn.) in the first half.

Tufts came out of intermission and took control of the momentum in the second half. Lach got them on the scoreboard with his first of the year, heading the ball over Leahy in the 68th minute. Senior tri-captain Peter DeGregorio set up the goal.

Play went into the final 10 minutes with Tufts holding the 1-0 lead until Schoening netted his third of the year with a low shot into the right corner. Sophomore Mike Fitzgerald had an assist on the play.

The Jumbos had nine of their 12 total shots in the second half. Leahy saved six of them to finish with seven stops in the Springfield goal. By contrast, Tonelli did not face a shot on goal in the second half. He finished with four saves for the sixth shutout of his career. Junior tri-captain Bear Duker was very involved with three shots for Tufts, while junior Tip Nolan (Burlington, Vt.) paced the Pride with two shots.

Tufts plays a NESCAC match against Bates College on Homecoming Day this Saturday (Sept. 27) at Tufts. Springfield is in NEWMAC action on Saturday at home against WPI.
