Springfield College Athletics: Conference/Regional Accolades Continue to Mount
Springfield, Mass. -- May 26, 2009 -- When Jake Beebe was named the Pilgrim Lacrosse League's Player of the Year a few weeks ago, he became the 11th Conference Player of the Year at Springfield College throughout the course of 2008-2009. Conference and Regional accolades continue to pile up for the Pride. This past year, besides the incredible total of 11 conference Players of the Year, Springfield College garnered seven Conference Coaches of the Year (eight if you count one assistant coach), three Conference Rookies of the Year, and eight Conference/Regional team titles. Springfield's number of Players of the Year for 2008-2009 totalled an astonishing seven more than all of last year. There were four in the fall, including Jane Kelleher (NEWMAC) in field hockey; Greg Levings (NECC) in men's golf; Heather Lively (NEWMAC) in women's volleyball; and Lauren Peltier (NEWMAC) in women's soccer. Three more were added in the winter, including Corey Finch (NEWMAC) in women's basketball; Moira Price (NEWMAC) in women's swimming; and Brian Sobel (NEWMAC) in men's diving. In the spring, SC added four more, including Jake Beebe (Pilgrim League) in men's lacrosse; Nikki Hay (NEWMAC) in women's track & field; Steve Headley (NEWMAC) in men's track & field; and Michelle Wlosek (NEWMAC) in softball.
Not included in the above figure were four more Regional honors achieved by two of those already mentioned. Hay was named the USTFCCCA New England Women's Field Athlete of the Year both indoors and outdoors, while Headley was named the USTFCCCA New England Men's Track Athlete of the Year both indoors and outdoors.
The Pride also had three conference Rookies of the Year, the same figure as last year. They included: Kim Giaquinto (NEWMAC) in women's volleyball; Kaitlin Reilly (NEWMAC) in women's swimming; and Mike Delia (Pilgrim League) in men's lacrosse.
The Regional/Conference Coaches of the Year totalled seven head coaches all told, three more than last year. They included: Pete Avdoulos (NEWMAC) in men's diving; Joel Dearing (NEWMAC) in women's volleyball; Joe Eadie (NECC) in men's golf; John Gibson (NEWMAC) in women's soccer; Kathy Mangano (NEWMAC) in softball; Steve Posner (East Regional) in men's gymnastics; and Melissa Rogers (NEWMAC) in field hockey. Besides those seven head coaches, Springfield can include one additional Assistant Coach of the Year in Joe Van Gilder (New England USTFCCCA) in track & field.
After all was said and done, Springfield College was most proud to win eight Regional/Conference team titles in 2008-2009. Those included four in the fall -- field hockey (NEWMAC), men's golf (NECC), women's soccer (NEWMAC), and women's volleyball (NEWMAC). There were two in the winter -- indoor women's track & field (ECAC), and women's swimming & diving (NEWMAC). And, finally, there were two more in the spring -- men's lacrosse (Pilgrim League), and softball (NEWMAC).
As of May 26, SC had also accumulated a total of 31 All-Americans, who gained All-America status a total of 51 times.
Also, as of May 22, SC student-athletes had accumulated a total of 123 academic honors (conference, regional, national). Last year, that number totalled 96. This was the first year that SC had cracked the century figure in that category.
