Springfield, Mass. -- October 29, 2009 -- A goal with 5:47 left by senior co-captain Morgan Rein on Senior Night gave the Springfield College field hockey team a 2-1 non-conference victory over Plymouth State tonight at Amos Alonzo Stagg Field on the SC campus. One of the elite programs in Division III, the Springfield College field hockey team reached the national championship game in 2000 and the national semifinals in 1999. For four consecutive seasons, from 1998 to 2001, a Springfield College player garnered New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Player of the Year honors, including current head coach Rogers in 2001. Rogers took the head coaching reigns in 2004 from field hockey legend Dottie Potter Zenaty, who retired after 34 years on the SC sidelines.
In 2006, Brittany Veazie was named NFHCA Division III First Team All-American, as well as NEWMAC Player of the Year. In addition, Jane Kelleher was named NFHCA Division III Second Team All-American. In 2007, Kelleher was named NEWMAC Player of the Year, and goalkeeper Emma Kaplan was named a First Team All-American. And in 2008, Kelleher was again named NEWMAC Player of the Year, becoming the first player since 1991 to win that honor in back-to-back seasons, as well as a Second Team All-American by two separate organizations.
Springfield College’s Stagg Field hosted the 2001 and 2002 NCAA Division III Field Hockey National Championships. It was the first time in NCAA history that both semifinal games and the national championship had been played at a pre-determined site. Springfield also hosted the 1984 and 1989 Division I National Championships.
After only five years as head coach of the Pride, Melissa Rogers, has continued the SC tradition of winning on the field hockey turf, posting an impressive 94-24 record, good for a winning percentage of .796 at the helm of her alma mater. She is the reigning NEWMAC Coach of the Year and NFHCA New England East Region Coach of the Year. Read more.
