Ashley Reves (Ochard Park, N.Y.) registered 14 kills, 11 digs and three service aces as the top-seeded Pride downed No.4 Coast Guard, 3-0, in the second semifinal of the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Women’s Volleyball Tournament tonight at Blake Arena.
The Pride (32-2 overall), which is ranked No. 25 nationally and won its 19th consecutive match, moves on to Saturday’s conference championship against No. 3 seed MIT. The Engineers topped defending-champion Wellesley, 3-1, in tonight’s first semifinal.
The teams have met three times this season. MIT won, 3-1, on Sept. 27, while the Pride won 3-2 on Oct. 8 and 3-1 on Oct. 25.
SC senior
Roxanne Brueler (East Haddam, Conn.) totaled 13 kills in the win, while senior outside hitter
Christine Jones (Wallingford, Conn.) added 10 kills, seven digs and three service aces.
In the first semifinal, MIT senior outside hitter Nydia Clayton (Nanuet, N.Y.) had a match-high 21 kills as the third-seeded Engineers defeated second-seed Wellesley, 3-1.
MIT (26-6) ends Wellesley’s championship reign in the conference. The Blue (17-15) had won eight consecutive conference titles.
MIT’s victory was reminiscent of its 3-1 win over Wellesley on Sept. 13, when the Engineers also rallied from a 1-0 deficit. Sophomore middle hitter Caroline Jordan (Los Altos Hills, Calif.) had a big night with 16 digs and 13 kills, and sophomore outside hitter Arlis Reynolds (Coast Mesa, Calif.) added 12 kills and 11 digs.
For Wellesley, freshman outside hitter Arielle Goodley (Escondido, Calif.) recorded 22 digs to go along with nine kills.
