Women's Volleyball Falls To Coast Guard, 3-1, In NEWMAC Opener

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Sept. 17, 2002 – Springfield College senior outside hitter Heather Schlitz (Huntington Station, N.Y.) registered 18 kills and 15 digs, but visiting Coast Guard defeated the Pride, 3-1 (30-28, 30-20, 22-30, 30-26), in the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women’s volleyball opener for both teams.

Coast Guard senior outside hitter Katie Johann (Bayport, N.Y.) totaled a match-high 25 kills along with 13 digs as the Bears (6-2, 1-0 NEWMAC) handed Springfield (8-1, 0-1 NEWMAC) its first loss of the season.

Coast Guard held Springfield, the NEWMAC’s top hitting team (.305), to a .143 hitting percentage for the match.
