Women's Volleyball Falls To Coast Guard, 3-1, In NEWMAC Opener
BoxscoreSPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Sept. 17, 2002 – Springfield College senior outside hitter Heather Schlitz (Huntington Station, N.Y.) registered 18 kills and 15 digs, but visiting Coast Guard defeated the Pride, 3-1 (30-28, 30-20, 22-30, 30-26), in the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women’s volleyball opener for both teams.
Coast Guard senior outside hitter Katie Johann (Bayport, N.Y.) totaled a match-high 25 kills along with 13 digs as the Bears (6-2, 1-0 NEWMAC) handed Springfield (8-1, 0-1 NEWMAC) its first loss of the season.
Coast Guard held Springfield, the NEWMAC’s top hitting team (.305), to a .143 hitting percentage for the match.

Head Coach Joel Dearing
Joel Dearing will enter his 21st season as head women's volleyball coach at his alma mater in the fall of 2009. Dearing is regarded nationally as one of the sport’s best coaches and he has the resume to prove it. Dearing ranks in the top-10 in Division III history with a 670-298 (.692) overall mark in 28 seasons as a women’s volleyball coach.
