SPRINGFIELD, Mass., Oct. 5, 2004 - Springfield College sophomore middle blocker
Mary Kathryn O’Neil (Liverpool, N.Y.) totaled 11 kills and a .500 hitting percentage to lead the Pride to a 3-0 (30-16, 30-19, 30-26) win over Wheaton College this evening in New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women’s volleyball action in Blake Arena.
Wheaton jumped out to a 6-2 lead, before seven-straight points, including four-straight service aces by sophomore libero
Leah Hettrick (Meriden, Conn.), gave the Pride a lead that it wouldn’t relinquish, 9-7, en route to the 30-16 game-one victory.
SC (14-4, 4-1 NEWMAC) never trailed in game two, opening a 14-9 lead that included four of senior middle blocker
Christine Jones’ (Wallingford, Conn.) 11 kills in the match on the way to a 30-19 win in game two.
In game three, Wheaton never trailed by more than three points, until four kills by sophomore middle blocker
Mary Kathryn O’Neil (Liverpool, N.Y.) put the Pride out of reach, 25-21, for the 30-26 final.
Sophomore setter Alexis Leisman’s 23 assists and 12 digs led Wheaton (7-7, 2-3 NEWMAC).
The Pride returns to action this Saturday (Oct. 9) hosting the eight-team Tom Hay Invitational which starts at 9:00 a.m. Junior All-American
Ashley Reves (Orchard Park, N.Y.) will look to become only the seventh player in SC history to compile 1,000-career kills with 994 to date.

Dearing is regarded nationally as one of the sport’s best coaches and he has the resume to prove it. Dearing ranks in the top-10 in Division III history with a 670-298 (.692) overall mark in 28 seasons as a women’s volleyball coach.
