Women's Volleyball Captures NEWMAC Championship

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., Nov. 8, 2003 –Springfield College sophomore setter Alesia Vaccari (Winsted, Conn.) registered 26 assists, 11 digs and a pair of service aces as the top-seeded Pride downed No.3 MIT, 3-0 (30-18, 30-27, 30-23), to win the 2003 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Women's Volleyball Championship tonight at Blake Arena.

The Pride (33-2 overall), which is ranked No. 25 nationally, won its school-record 20th consecutive match. SC gains its first berth in the NCAA Division III Tournament since 1997. The field for the NCAA Division III Tournament will be selected on Sunday, Nov. 9.

“This is one of those special teams that I’ll never forget,” said head coach Joel Dearing, who won his 402nd match at SC tonight, “They just love to compete, and they have unbelievable chemistry.”

SC sophomore Leah Hettrick (Meriden, Conn.) totaled seven kills and six digs in the win, while sophomore outside hitter Ashley Reves (Orchard Park, N.Y.) added six kills, seven digs and two service aces.

MIT senior outside hitter Nydia Clayton (Nanuet, N.Y.) had a match-high 10 kills, while sophomore setter Austin Zimmerman (Scottsdale, Ariz.) chipped in 28 assists and 15 digs for the Engineers, who fall to 26-7 for the season.

Joel Dearing Joel Dearing will enter his 21st season as head women's volleyball coach at his alma mater in the fall of 2009. Dearing is regarded nationally as one of the sport’s best coaches and he has the resume to prove it.
