

WELLESLEY, Mass., September 12, 2006 - Springfield College sophomore setter Caitlin Mulroy (Syracuse, N.Y.) totaled a team-best 36 assists as the Pride started its 2006 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) season in impressive fashion, defeating the Wellesley College Blue in Wellesley, Mass., this evening, 3-0.
The win improves SC to 8-1 overall on the year. The Pride opened up the match by defeating the Blue in a close, 30-28 game. SC then picked up two straight 30-23 games to complete the 3-0 sweep.
Senior middle blocker MaryKathryn O'Neil (Liverpool, N.Y.) led the way in attacking for the Pride with a team-high 17 kills. Senior libero Leah Hettrick (Meriden, Conn.), the reigning NEWMAC Player of the Week, added to her already all-time leading SC career dig total tonight with another team-best 19.
The Pride will next return home for yet another conference match on Saturday afternoon, September 16th, in a 1:00 p.m. start against Wheaton College.
Joel Dearing will enter his 21st season as head women's volleyball coach at his alma mater in the fall of 2009. Dearing is regarded nationally as one of the sport’s best coaches and he has the resume to prove it. Dearing ranks in the top-10 in Division III history with a 670-298 (.692) overall mark in 28 seasons as a women’s volleyball coach.
