Gordon Tops Women's Volleyball , 3-1
SPRINGFIELD, Mass., Oct. 12, 2002-- Springfield College junior Heather Carpenter (Newington, Conn.) and freshman Alesia Vaccari (Winsted, Conn.) were selected to the all-tournament team of the 2002 Tom Hay Invitational, but the Pride fell to Gordon College, 3-1, in the championship match at Blake Arena.Gordon sophomore Rebecca Carlson, who totaled 14 kills and 20 digs against the Pride, was selected as the tournament’s most valuable player. Gordon, which is the number-one ranked Division III team in New England, improves to 24-0.
Vaccari had 45 assists and 18 digs in the championship match, while Carpenter added 12 kills. In the opening match of the day, SC swept WNEC, 3-0, thanks in part to Carpenter, who had 13 kills and hit .632. The Pride is 16-4 overall.
The tournament is named for the Tom Hay, who won 660 matches in 22 seasons as Springfield College’s men’s and women’s volleyball coach.

Head Coach Joel Dearing
Joel Dearing will enter his 21st season as head women's volleyball coach at his alma mater in the fall of 2009. Dearing is regarded nationally as one of the sport’s best coaches and he has the resume to prove it. Dearing ranks in the top-10 in Division III history with a 670-298 (.692) overall mark in 28 seasons as a women’s volleyball coach.
