Women's Volleyball Advances In NEWMAC Tournament With 3-2 Win Over Smith College

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Nov. 2, 2002 – Springfield College senior outside hitter Heather Schlitz (Huntington Station, N.Y.) registered a match-high 20 kills and 15 digs, while senior middle blocker Jaime Austin (Bedford, N.H.) totaled 18 kills to lead the Pride to the 3-2 (30-28, 30-20, 29-31, 27-30, 15-13) victory over Smith College in the first round of the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Women’s Volleyball Tournament in Blake Arena.

Springfield (23-11), the tournament’s #4 seed, jumped out to a 2-0 lead, before the Pioneers, seeded #5, rebounded by winning the next two games.

Smith senior outside hitter Kristin Locurto (San Jose, Calif.) was credited with 19 kills and 22 digs, while freshman outside hitter Kate Sorensen (Kelso, Wash.) added 15 kills and 30 digs as the Pioneers finish their season 15-14.

Springfield advances to the tournament semifinals where it will face top-seeded Wellesley College, who defeated #8 Babson College, 3-0 (30-26, 30-11, 30-25), on Saturday, November 9 in Wellesley.
